THE CHALLENGE: Aircheck
Earth

Develop an app or platform to crowd-source information for comparing changes in environmental factors, such as temperature, relative humidity, air pollution, with occurrence of symptoms of allergies and respiratory diseases. Create tools for public entry and grading of symptoms, including but not limited to cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, sneezing, nasal obstruction, itchy eyes; and geographic mapping of symptom frequency and intensity. Create a platform for comparison of symptom map with NASA provided data, with visualization options for web and/or smart phone.

Explanation

Boreas is a data visualization and analysis tool that aims to find out whether air pollution might be the cause for the recent rise of allergies. We use algorithms from statistics and artificial intelligence to check for a correlation between two sets of data:

  • NASA GIBS imagery on atmospheric conditions
  • Crowdsourced information on allergy symptoms
The key features of the product are:
  • Visualise the two sets of data on a map to allow users to browse by date and layer
  • Find a correlation between the two sets of data for a given period of time
  • Make a prediction on how likely users are to experience allergy symptoms based on previous data
