AirVironment

THE CHALLENGE: Aircheck
Earth

Develop an app or platform to crowd-source information for comparing changes in environmental factors, such as temperature, relative humidity, air pollution, with occurrence of symptoms of allergies and respiratory diseases. Create tools for public entry and grading of symptoms, including but not limited to cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, sneezing, nasal obstruction, itchy eyes; and geographic mapping of symptom frequency and intensity. Create a platform for comparison of symptom map with NASA provided data, with visualization options for web and/or smart phone.

Explanation

Mobile data access is not a always an option, especially for people in the third world countries. That's why, we created a platform for gathering information, not just thru the internet but also thru SMS.

Allowing people to be able to give feedback on environmental factors like air pollution anywhere anytime, will give us a a good idea on how polluted our air really is. Some of the main feature of AirVironment are:

  • Gather air quality information using SMS, this is really needed in developing countries like the Philippines as not everyone has access to mobile data
  • Opening up ways of integrating with other services. We have achieved this by opening up an API that other people can use in their own ways to give input on air quality in their place.
  • Visualization allows people to see how polluted the area is and what are some prominent symptoms associated to air pollution
  • Data we gathered is exposed thru an API and can be used by others if they want to.
  • Using data from EONET API, we can also show recent events that might have triggered the change in overall air quality like volcano explosion, forest fires, storms, etc.

Future extensions/feature:

  • Ability to send messages in response to natural events like storms, tsunamis, etc. It will serve as an early warning for people to get notified about what to do in this kinds of events.
  • Mobile app interface for the viewing and rating air quality over an area.
  • Using the data we gather over a year long course to create and enhance models for air quality its contribution to the overall world climate.
  • Have a medical extension/integration with hospitals and local government to improve support over areas that are polluted. Allow them to use the data to be able to do proper actions like free checkups and medical missions. This is really effective due to the fact that people in rural areas can only communicate via SMS due to the lack of internet connectivity.
