THE CHALLENGE: Aircheck
Earth

Develop an app or platform to crowd-source information for comparing changes in environmental factors, such as temperature, relative humidity, air pollution, with occurrence of symptoms of allergies and respiratory diseases. Create tools for public entry and grading of symptoms, including but not limited to cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, sneezing, nasal obstruction, itchy eyes; and geographic mapping of symptom frequency and intensity. Create a platform for comparison of symptom map with NASA provided data, with visualization options for web and/or smart phone.

Explanation

The Canary is a mobile app and wearable item that tracks local air quality data and guides the wearer to a Safe Air Zone, as designated by live data. The wearable item is a hood that contains a lighted compass, ranging from green to red depending on the proximity of the Safe Air Zone. It also contains a filtration system that automatically activates based on the live data from the app.

This product arose out of personal need after a lifetime of dealing with asthma. The goal is to aggregate live air quality data and trigger a response from the wearable item. By merging wearables with data, the items we wear and depend on can be used to protect us from the environment as well.

To meet the challenge, the atmospheric data will be filtered through our app, leading the wearable to make "smart" decisions and navigation on behalf of the wearer. Since poor air quality is directly linked to health, having a wearable equipped with navigation and respiration keeps the wearer safe as they travel to safety.
