THE CHALLENGE: eMobile Pastoralism
Earth

Help pastoralist communities around the world preserve their livelihood, by providing them access to information and resources (e.g grass land, water, safe routes) to prepare and support their migration journey.

The objective of the project is to design a working prototype for a mobile application which provides pastoralists community with information on land monitoring: water availability, grassland, and assist communities in networking.

Explanation

We localized the problem and developed our application to solve the problems encountered by Ja'o, a hypothetical modern day Nigerian pastoral farmer. While doing this, we made sure our solution remained relevant to pastoral farmers across the world. Ja'o's challenges in the modern world stem from urbanization, ever changing climatic conditions and inflexible land use acts.

Our application provides farmers information about their current location and any other location of their choosing. The app identifies available water sources and grazing lands, which are approved by the government or the local authority for grazing, and displays this information on the Google map interface. For the purpose of the well being of the farmer, we also included the contact information of hospitals and police stations nearest to the selected location. And for the safety of Ja'o and his cattle, we provided safe route to migrate from current location to his destination.

The application is designed to maintain a simplistic interface, putting into consideration the computer literacy level of most local farmers. We decided to make it a scalable web application, which extends it's use beyond just cellphones, but also to tablets, PCs and other Internet capable devices.
