THE CHALLENGE: eMobile Pastoralism
Earth

Help pastoralist communities around the world preserve their livelihood, by providing them access to information and resources (e.g grass land, water, safe routes) to prepare and support their migration journey.

The objective of the project is to design a working prototype for a mobile application which provides pastoralists community with information on land monitoring: water availability, grassland, and assist communities in networking.

Explanation

We will provide a network for pastoral communities to make informed decision while migrating across rangelands in Australia. Pastoralists depend on NGOs and Pastoral Associations for rebates, grants and other information. This application helps the pastoral communities to connect directly to NGOs and other pastoral communities. Taking into account what their needs are along with what risks might occur during their journey (such as conflicts between communities, drought, and disease within livestock), our mobile app is a platform to share location based information and help pastoralists define their migration journey with less uncertain possibilities. Information such as availability of water and vegetation is provided. Real time data might not be possible in areas with unreliable internet/data connectivity; in addition MODIS vegetation indices are produced on 16-days intervals. Sat phones are suggested to be provided to each community to solve any connectivity issues. Feedback functionality is provided in the "Nomads" application in order to let users leave a review of the location they are currently in. Pastoralists themselves will help others to know more updated information. The app has a simple design in order for easy understanding, so the app can be easily used by pastoralists with poor literacy skills.
