Collision Course

THE CHALLENGE: Space Recreation
Journey to Mars

There is a great deal of interest from national space agencies to go to the Moon and Mars. ESA wants to go to the Moon and establish a village there. NASA wants to go to Mars. Astronauts and Cosmonauts from all over the world are already living aboard the ISS. What can they do in their free time? It can’t be all about reading books or game play on computers. Think of new sports or games that could take into account the low gravity (e.g. a space lacrosse game, extreme basketball). What about real or virtual experiences involving the Apollo 11 landing site on the Moon? Or following the paths of Sojourner, Spirit or Curiosity on Mars using a form of cross-country skiing? Think of new ways for to astronauts to use their free time. To present your results develop an app that makes use of virtual reality tools.

Explanation

1. Introduction

Collision Course is a competitive multiplayer sport designed to incorporate a microgravity environment with Newton’s laws of motion, precise human motor skills, and tactical supremacy!

The game is an analogue to billiards and is designed to be played in confined environments like the ISS. Have hours of fun with different game modes, tactics, and challenges! Easy to learn, difficult to master.

a.x01 ball (white) [Point Ball]

b. x20 ball (black) [Attack Balls]

c. x01 ball (red) [Target ball, Red team, Placed in front of the Blue Team]

d. x01 ball (blue) [Target ball, Blue team, Placed in front of the Red Team]

e. x02 Safety net

3. Mechanics (with several variations)

3.1 Players

1. Number of teams, 2

1.Blue Team

2.Red Team

2.Equal number of members per team (max=2)

3.2 Field setup

3.2.1 As a precaution to collateral damage, safety nets are to be set at the end of each field/game area, behind the players.

3.2.2 The Point Ball is placed at the center of the playing field.

3.2.3 The target ball is to be positioned at the preference of the team (x,y,z).

3.2.3.1 Target ball must be positioned in front of the opposing team’s side.

3.2.3.2 Target ball must be within the target zone.

3.2.3.3 Players are not allowed to enter the play field.

3.3.4 The scoring of a point concludes a round.

3.3.5 The team agrees on the number of rounds

3.4 Scoring

3.4.1 Once the target ball is displaced with the point ball, the opposing team scores a point.

3.4.3 Players are not allowed to move their team’s target balls during gameplay

3.4.4 Players are free to reposition their target balls at the end of each round.

4. Tactics

4.1 Players are allowed to “deny” the opposing team by targeting their attack balls (so long as it is not the target ball)

4.2 Attack balls are allowed to bounce on the surfaces of the playing field

4.2.1 Attack balls are not allowed to bounce off players.

4.3 Players are allowed to throw their attack balls at will

4.3.1 Timed vs fast vs moderate vs slow shots.

4.3.2 Precision shots vs barrage

4.3.3 Use curveballs (high level technique where in the ball is thrown with a spinning

motion to make the ball curve in mid-air)

4.4 Players are free to reposition themselves for better aim so long as they do not enter the playing field.

5. Game Modes (Alternative)

5.1 [Mode: Volley] Attack balls could either be set to an indefinite amount.

5.2 [Mode: Precision] Attack balls could be set to a smaller amount.

5.3 [Mode: Futility] Players may opt to not use attack balls and instead blow the Point Ball to the opposite end of the playing field or to the Target Ball
