Spaceball

THE CHALLENGE: Space Recreation
Journey to Mars

There is a great deal of interest from national space agencies to go to the Moon and Mars. ESA wants to go to the Moon and establish a village there. NASA wants to go to Mars. Astronauts and Cosmonauts from all over the world are already living aboard the ISS. What can they do in their free time? It can’t be all about reading books or game play on computers. Think of new sports or games that could take into account the low gravity (e.g. a space lacrosse game, extreme basketball). What about real or virtual experiences involving the Apollo 11 landing site on the Moon? Or following the paths of Sojourner, Spirit or Curiosity on Mars using a form of cross-country skiing? Think of new ways for to astronauts to use their free time. To present your results develop an app that makes use of virtual reality tools.

Explanation

Spaceball is a clone of some common games such as wall ball, etc. This game can be played with 2 - 4 players. With 4 players two teams of two would be created. What you will need: Spaceball requires two socks, a shirt, some small object with some weight, and some straps, some duct tape or bungie cords. Preparation: To set up Spaceball take the shirt and attach the straps, bungee cords, or duct tape to the four corners. For the straps or bungee cords the top two should go through the arm holes and up through the head hole. For the bottom two you can tie the strap around a bundled up bit of the bottom corners of the shirt, poke a small hole in the bottom sides to attach the bungee cords, or tape the shirt with duct tape. Once attached to the shirt attach the straps, bungee coords, or tape on to the sides of the habitat leaving room behind the shirt. There should be some tension of the shirt but not to much. Now take the two socks and small object, place the object in-between the socks and tie the socks together. How to Play: Play rock paper scissors to decide who goes first. Whoever goes first throws the ball of socks into the shirt and has it bounce off, then the other team has to catch it and throw it back into the net, etc. Scoring goes to ten points. 1 point is earned by one team bouncing the ball into the net and the other team not catching it. If a person is in the way and prevents someone from catching it their team is deducted 1 point.
