MOONiE

THE CHALLENGE: Book it to the Moon
Solar System

Develop an interactive app for children that uses smart phone and tablet sensory to locate the Moon (any time of the day, even below horizon), which unlocks current lunar data (phase, distance, etc), and then presents the user options for reading a "Moon" related story, view space agency photos and videos, and/or fun facts about the Moon. The goal of this challenge is edutainment and raising awareness about lunar missions around the world.

Explanation

The world has become quite a busy place. People are always in a rush to do something, to go somewhere. Parents have less time to spend with their children. So the kids are left to study only what the education system will teach them. And what we are taught from a young age is to steer clear from sciences like astronautics. In our country for example, there is another BIG problem. The lack of available resources for learning. For the whole world this things mean less astronauts and engineers who will help make a change in the way we see the universe.

Why not change this?

Be believe steel is forged while it's flaming hot. This is where we plan to make a change. If we can explain complex astrophysics and astronautics in a fun, easy way, we think we can get more kids to develop their thirst for knowledge in this areas. Who knows what our final frontier will be in a decade or two when this kids grow up.

So, how do we plan to make this change?

Our app is designed and developed in a way we believe is easy for a child to interact with. It has a lot of animations, lot of pictures, videos and sounds, because human kind is before all visual. The app features avatars that are supposed to make using it more fun and more attractive to a child's mind. Some of the features are:

  • Compass: shows the current location of the moon. It the moon is bellow horizon it shows the message "The Moon is sleeping right now"
  • Current Moon Phase: accompanied by a fun story, lots of pictures and fun facts. It also shows the dates of the next moon phases.
  • Timeline of Moon Missions: with fun stories attached to them and a read out loud option for the youngest ones who can't read yet.
  • Multimedia: with lots of pictures, videos, social media shared content and 3D objects.
  • Hologram: an option that sends a video to another phone with a partner application. You can make your own prism and bring the moon closer to you.
  • Secure Parental Control: allows the parent to activate and deactivate features to control their child's activities.
  • Notifications about moon phases and life stream launches.

We plan a lot more for the future, because we believe that this app is just the tip of the iceberg. There is a long and hard way to go to make a change. But we are ready.
