Low Cost VR Experience Kit

Space Station

Using multimedia resources found online, develop a virtual experience that would allow someone to experience a past or upcoming rocket launch as if they were observing it from a few miles away (i.e. a close, but safe distance from the launch pad). If possible, convey the impact that local/global/space weather has on a launch.

Explanation

As a Maker who know little about coding, I wish to create a VR experience kit using DIY/Recycled Material and readily available technology/application.

Objective:

  • - To create a open source, low cost and easily recreate VR experience Kit
  • - Provide public a gateway to experience VR in real life and having some physical intreaction with the VR experience itself.

Solution:

We decide to build a 3D printed VR goggle and a DIY motorized Stool that provide a vibrating experiece during rocket launching event.

  • - 3D printed VR goggles (available from : http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:729029)
  • - Cheap magnifying glass x 2 (available from 1 dollar store such as Daiso etc)
  • - DIY stool (we self build ourselves using scrapped wooden pallet from recycle center)
  • - Motor and mounting (We initially use a damaged vacuum cleaner motor but later swap it to 3 smaller Toy DC motor due to loud noise)
  • - Arduino open source micro controller and Motor Shield (We use a product from Cytron : www.cytron.com.my/p-mdds10)
  • - VR content from NASA youtube 360 feed and Facebook 360 feed.
  • - VR content from LittStar VR Cinema App.
  • - A speaker system for more immersed experience.

Future improvement:

Since our solution is using micro controller, we are further customize our VR experience to other type of space experience such as:

- High G acceleration astronaut experience

a motorized jig that swing the VR viewer around to simulated how high power thrust of rocket and the High G experience.

- Free Fall experience

We can create a floating jig and let VR viewer experience how free fall environment feel.

- Low gravity Moon walk

We can create a walking jig and let user feel how to moon walk in low gravity environment.

Resources Used

For VR experience in Smartphone, we use LittStar App:
