THE CHALLENGE: Astrocize
Space Station

Find a way to adapt common gym tools for a reduced gravity environment and design a workout routine that can minimize bone and muscular loss while being fun and easy to use during a long term mission. In doing so consider constraints regarding weight (equipment should weigh less than 500kg) and dimensions. Consider incorporating virtual reality to simulate a jog through an astronaut’s favorite Earth destinations or incorporate gaming to motivate users.

Explanation

Adept is not just an app, but a whole system the purpose of which is to Adapt existing exercise devices to work in the 0G conditions of space.

The iOS app is used to connect to various exercise devices, such as the TAO WellShell and our prototype Adept Stick. It displays exercise progress and sends logs to the server. Another feature is the scanner for bar codes, which allows astronauts to track exactly what food they eat while on their long journey.

All information collected from the app is synced to our server and then displayed on a web page, making it easily accessible for doctors to analyze. They can then recommend exercises for improving the astronaut's workout regime.

Our app is directly connected to the apple health kit, making use of already available tools to better track and analyze a person's condition.

The Adept Stick is a mobile exercise device working on the principle of isometrics. The user has to pull the two handles in opposite directions. The force applied on the rope connecting them is measured and displayed on a dynamic graph on the iOS app. This method of exercising doesn't demand wild, rapid movements, making it perfect for the limited dimensions of a spacecraft.

For developers:

Electronic schematic is made on Fritzing software

The iOS application is compatible with Apple Doc style format and the code is high quality self documenting code.

The firmware is written in Arduino IDE

According to the fact that the stick is build from metal be careful while making isolation inside the handle.
