Earth O'Clock

THE CHALLENGE: Earth Live
Earth

Develop a web tool, mobile device app or add-on for existing apps or websites that leverages NASA imagery and climate data to illustrate the impacts of our changing Earth in areas of interest to you. Some ideas to explore include:

  • Use NASA Earth observations data, social media, smart phones, and Short Message Service (SMS) text phones to collect Earth observations and connect public in local, regional, and national networks to communicate about our changing planet.
  • Examine current natural events curated by NASA’s EONET (Earth Observatory Natural Event Tracker) by browsing global historical and near real-time imagery from space.
  • Upload images or other data points demonstrating visible observations and how they compare to satellite data. For example, generating early-warning alerts or validating precipitation rates reported from NASA’s Global Precipitation Measurement Mission.
  • Integrate NASA imagery with a mobile assistant to allow for dynamic image generation based on a basic request structure.
Explanation

Earth O'Clock Presentation

Earth O'Clock is a web application which uses NASA’s EONET in combination with various APIs in order to visualize near real time natural events around the globe.

The main entries in the application are data collected from NASA's provided links. Furthermore, open data libraries and databases are used to collect additional information.

Earth O'Clock visualizes EONET's data, showing all the categories where an event may belong. For each category we tried to find an adequate (near real-time) API in order to show more open data information. The application receives coordinates in order to represent information about a specific event which occurred the past 20 days per se.

The main idea is to raise awareness about the natural events which occur on planet Earth and are potential threat for humanity and the environment. The more information available at one single place, the more conscious we are about what is happening at the moment which leads to better data interpretation and visualization. Another thing that adds up is an intuitive UI/UX.
