THE CHALLENGE: Earth Live
Earth

Develop a web tool, mobile device app or add-on for existing apps or websites that leverages NASA imagery and climate data to illustrate the impacts of our changing Earth in areas of interest to you. Some ideas to explore include:

  • Use NASA Earth observations data, social media, smart phones, and Short Message Service (SMS) text phones to collect Earth observations and connect public in local, regional, and national networks to communicate about our changing planet.
  • Examine current natural events curated by NASA’s EONET (Earth Observatory Natural Event Tracker) by browsing global historical and near real-time imagery from space.
  • Upload images or other data points demonstrating visible observations and how they compare to satellite data. For example, generating early-warning alerts or validating precipitation rates reported from NASA’s Global Precipitation Measurement Mission.
  • Integrate NASA imagery with a mobile assistant to allow for dynamic image generation based on a basic request structure.
Explanation

We are building a system with a mesh of multiple applications that would help reduce risks and vulnerabilities caused from Glacial Lake Outburst Floods in Northern Pakistan, where more than 3044 lakes of different types have been identified, out of which about 30 are considered threatening.
Death tolls due to floods reaches in thousands in Pakistan. Global warming is causing glaciers of the Himalayan range to melt, yet little data is known due to the tough terrain and harsh environment.

The natural reservoirs are up in extremely difficult places to reach, let alone research. We propose a system that would use satellite technology along with an ICT solution to monitor and alert the disaster management authorities before hand to save precious human lives.

Our solution comprises of:
1) A mobile app to:
a) let the users around the world know about the lakes of Pakistan
b) inform users about the types of lakes around the world
c) generate SMS alerts for those who sign up and are in close proximity of marked potentially dangerous lakes
d) provide real-time data via satellite & GSM network from a proposed mesh of telemetry equipment comprising of custom designed buoys
