Risky - the rover that dares to go places where humans can't

THE CHALLENGE: Origami Space Recycled
Technology

Design and model (virtually, with paper or 3D printed) the packaging of key mission components for size constrained spacecraft to minimize stowed volume, but maximize capabilities.

Explanation

A small robot with deployable wheels that can navigate different types of terrain and long distances. It can explore tricky places on Mars where humans can’t go.

Risky the rover is made of modular components to be customizable depending on the use case. Using origami techniques, we created wheels that are collapsable and expandable depending on what type of terrain the rover will be navigating through.

Other modular components include:

  • A deployable arm to grab samples
  • A camera to take photos
  • An arm for drilling into surface
  • Deployable wheels
  • Straps to attach to space suit
  • Spider-like webs for tricky terrain surfaces
